Juneau Arts & Humanities Council: “Two Stone Guys ” by Lou Cacioppo & Bob Koenitzer, and “Grit” by MK MacNaughton

Unusual stones and creative minds. This show features new and old stone sculptures created by Lou and Bob. Many of the pieces are made from Alaskan marble and limestone from Southeast Alaska. Lou is a master artist, creating unique works of art from alder, cedar, plaster, and stone. Lou’s masks/sculptures represent an astonishing variety of themes, prompting one friend to say, “I think every time he blinks, he sees a different vision.” Through portrait sculpture, Lou creates visual links that portray the underlying feelings and emotions of everyday life. His art addresses changes in the modern world, changes so vast and rapid that man can scarcely adjust. Bob creates stone art that is visually pleasing by highlighting the natural features in each piece of stone. Most of Bob’s art is made from Alaskan stone gathered on Prince of Wales Island, near Juneau, and on Northern Chichagof Island. Sculpt Alaska creations include stone vessels, abstract sculptures, garden basins, and candle lamps. Bob also carves masks from stone and wood.
Also at the JACC: MK MacNaughton’s continually rotating show “Grit” features local working Juneauites! This weeks portrait is Gabriel Meachum, underground miner. MK swaps portraits and descriptions out every Monday.
Coppa: MK MacNaughton

MK MacNaughton will exhibit new oil paintings featuring Southeast Alaska lighthouses and aerial wetlands landscapes at Coppa for the month of November. MK will be at Coppa from 4-6pm to greet the public and answer any questions. Stop by to see new work and learn about her upcoming classes, holiday gift cards, and art catering opportunities. Coppa is open 6:00am-9:00pm on Friday.

Trickster Company will be featuring Tlingit/Tsimshian/Chippewa artist Ronnie Fairbanks of Klawock, AK. Ronnie is currently a Native Arts Carving teacher at the Craig Middle and High School in Craig, Alaska. Ronnie will be demonstrating some of his work in the gallery, and has brought along with him a variety of art mediums – art prints, bandanas, hoodies and a few surprises! Stop by to meet this amazing Southeast artist and grab some goodies!

Annie Kaill’s will be featuring 4 incredible artists: Barbara Lavallee, Alaskan artist & illustrator; Alice Tersteeg, artist; Jim Hopkins, ivory jewelry; and Sydne Williamson, upcycled furniture. Barbara Lavallee will be releasing a new print “Family Tree” and also showing her original paintings and personalizing her beloved children’s books. Alice Tersteeg brings a new collection of portraits from around Juneau titled “Personalities.” Jim Hopkins uses fossilized walrus and mammoth ivory for his necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Sydne Williamson is a Juneau artist who “upcycles” old furniture… refinishing, repainting, and redefining to create beautiful, functional pieces with a new lease on life!

Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Sealaska Heritage Store will host featured artists and a dance group at the Walter Soboleff Building for First Friday. Artists will include John Hagen, Renee Culp, Selena Beierly and Mary Folletti, and the Eagle Raven Dancers will perform in Shuká Hít—the clan house. During the First Friday reception from 4:30-8 p.m., SHI will offer free admission to the exhibit, “Enter the World of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Peoples” and Shuká Hít, and the store will offer special discounts.

Peoch-a-Labour: Alaskan and French Commercial Fishing The Rookery will be featuring large format photographs by local professional photographer Chris Miller, a selection of his commercial fishing photographs from the last 3 years. The photographs revolve around his work documenting commercial fisheries in Alaska and the French region of Brittany. The Alaska work includes imagery of Southeast, Alaska seining, dungeness crab, and golden king crab, pollock trawling in the Bering Sea, Red King Crab fishing on the pack ice in Nome, and Togiak herring. The French work focuses on fisheries for monkfish, lobster, rock crab, sea bass, langoustine, and abalone farming.

This November, The Canvas will be exhibiting work centered on the art of fly-fishing from six artists. The work ranges from utilitarian handmade bamboo rods and decorative Spey flies, to paintings and abstracts inspired by the fish that are such a strong base to the way of life in Southeast Alaska.

Juneau Douglas City Museum: “Communities, Disaster and Change,” plus on-going exhibits “Disasters at Home” and “The SS Princess Sophia’s Last Voyage”

This November First Friday is the exhibit opening for “Communities, Disaster and Change” plus on-going exhibits including “Disasters at Home” and “The SS Princess Sophia’s Last Voyage”.
“Communities, Disaster and Change” is a traveling exhibit, coordinated by the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive, and framed by the 50-year anniversary of the devastating Good Friday Earthquake that struck Alaska on March 27, 1964. It includes work by 28 Alaskan artists addressing the theme of natural disasters’ effects on their communities.
Two related, free events happen the following day, Saturday, November 7th. Coffee & Collections: The Disaster Cycle is a panel presentation from 10:30-12 noon, led by the Disaster Program Specialist from the American Red Cross, with representatives from agencies in town who work together to support the community before, during and after a natural disaster. The Red Cross Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 – 5, which teaches about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. This runs from 3-4 pm on November 7th, and pre-registration is encouraged to confirm a spot, as space is limited. Please contact the Museum at 586-3572 to sign up. If there is enough interest, additional programs will be scheduled to accommodate.

Rainforest Yoga: Yoga of Gratitude, Bev Ingram

Rainforest Yoga will offer an hour of yoga, from 5:15 to 6:15 pm on November 6 led by Bev Ingram. It will focus on some heart openers, standing poses, and ending with a restorative pose. A growing body of research shows that practicing gratitude is truly amazing in its physical and psychosocial benefits. All are welcome. Rainforest is located above Gold Town Theater in the Emporium Mall. Each First Friday features a different teacher and style. Gift certificates and memberships make a great gift and will be available for purchase before and after class.

Juneau Artist’s Gallery: Mark Vinsel & Dianne Anderson

Mark Vinsel and Dianne Anderson, husband and wife members of Juneau Artists Gallery will be featured artists for November, opening event on First Friday the 6th, with refreshments 4-7pm, at 175 South Franklin St, Juneau. They will display artwork from their July Artist-in-Residence at the Gruening Cabin, Amalga Harbor (out the road). They had the honor of being chosen for this experience, sponsored by Alaska State Parks from a nation-wide application process. Each will donate one piece of art to the State Parks collection. Mark will exhibit watercolors painted on site and framed in his handmade local wood frames. Dianne worked in drawing media then oil and will showcase the painting to be donated. She will also premiere her new product line: “Paper Moon” – hand-made papers for crafting.
Juneau Artist Gallery is open year-round Tues- Sat 11-6 PM and staffed by artist members.
