Women of the Moose award grant to the Elementary School Juried Art Show

The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council is pleased and honored to be the recipient of $300 granted by the Juneau Women of the Moose for the purposes of assisting with the production of the annual Juneau School District Elementary School Juried Student Art Show.  Cindy Hudson of the Women of the Moose presented the check on Wednesday, May 4.

Women of the Moose has helped to support this annual art show for the past four years. Hudson says “Art in elementary classrooms is so important! I just love to see the children’s work, and am so happy to help make sure everyone can enjoy it. I want people to see how giving can make a difference. ” Hudson and several members of the group volunteer their time to help mount and display the artwork, in addition to providing grant funds.

The Juneau School District Elementary School Juried Art Exhibit, the brain child of Nancy Lehnhart, the JSD elementary art teacher, has been held annually for many years. Two years ago, Lehnhart  approached the Council for assistance continuing the program in the face of staff and budget cuts. The Council, a Kennedy Center Any Given Child site, agreed to help.

The exhibit opens at Community Day on Campus: A Carnival of Arts on May 14 at 11 am, and then the artwork will be displayed around town at the public libraries.

Students whose work is selected for the exhibit receive awards presented at Community Day by Assembly member Jesse Kiehl and representatives from the School District.

To volunteer to help with this project, or for more information contact Nancy DeCherney, Executive Director at 586-2787.
