2023 Canvas of Aani

On Saturday, February 25, 2023, Juneau’s educators and teachers gathered at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School for a one-day Indigenous led conference, Canvas of Aani. The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council partnered with Artful Teaching and Tlingit and Haida to provide Juneau School District teachers (PreK through High School) with culturally responsive educational resources for Juneau’s youth.

The day started at 9am with morning sessions, and, at noon, broke out to enjoy a catered lunch from Zerelda’s Bistro. Afternoon sessions resumed at 1pm and the day ended at 4pm. All workshops were taught by local culture bearers and elders and included:

– The Music Inside with Yuxgitsiy George Holly
– Beginning Formline Design with Abel Ryan
– Lingit Beading with Taija Revels Neilga Koogei
– Plants as Medicine with Haa Tóoch Lichéesh Coalition
– Learning Lingit with Anna Neelaatughaa Clock
– Movement and Storytelling with Edward Littlefield
