September Gallery Show: Stitched North

Art Quilts from Studio Art Quilt Associates Alaska Members Stitched North brings together the work of nine artists from the Alaska region of Studio Art Quilt Associates, an international organization dedicated to promoting the art quilt as a fine art medium. This regional exhibition highlights the breadth and inventiveness of contemporary quilt making in Alaska. In these works, cloth becomes both surface and structure: layered, stitched, dyed, pieced, quilted, shaped, and transformed. The artists approach fiber as a flexible medium, a base for dyeing, printing, painting, stitching, mending, and manipulation. Their quilts invite you in for a closer look to see texture, handwork, pattern, and color. The title Stitched North speaks to geography, community, and making. In Alaska, distance is a defining condition, yet these works reveal connection between artists, materials, landscapes, and lived experience. Together, the nine artists in this exhibition expand the possibilities of the quilt form. Their work honors the quilting traditions of the past while embracing the principles of contemporary art: composition, experimentation, identity, environment, and meaning, and celebrates the vitality of Alaska’s art quilt community.
