Season Kick-Off & Mayor’s Award for the Arts August 21
5:30 – 7 pm at the JACC, Free
Join us in celebrating all the wonderful contributions that so many make in our community through the arts – We are delighted to be presenting the 2015 Mayor’s Awards for the Arts to:
Pat Belec, Artist, dancer extraordinaire, who shares her love of dance with students at Glacier Valley Elementary School’s HeART and Sole program, at the University of Alaska SE as an adjunct professor, as a choreographer for productions, and through her own dance studio. As well, she sings!
Heather Ridgway, Arts Educator, an artist who dedicates herself to helping young artists explore and develop their own talents as the art teacher at Juneau Douglas High School, and who works diligently to fundraise, build support for, and otherwise ensure that our students have access to great arts education.
Juneau Lyric Opera, Arts Organization, celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year – bringing our community operas, musical theater, vocal training, and working with the schools to give young people the chance to perform in their productions.
Annie Kaill’s, Business Leader, also celebrating its 40th Anniversary of carrying Alaskan artists in their shop that is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Many Alaskan artists can attribute their successful careers to the start and support that Annie Kaill’s gave them, and continues to offer artists.
Ron Gile, Innovative Use of the Art, photographer who started the Facebook group, Juneau Photo Group with over 5000 members who span the globe, exciting interest in photography, Alaska, and Juneau.
ConocoPhillips Alaska, Patron of the Arts, for their dedicated and generous support for many arts groups in Juneau.
Linda Rosenthal, Lifetime Achievement, for her many contributions through her artistry as a violinist, founder and artistic director of Juneau Jazz and Classics, teacher, touring artist, and supporter of the arts community here.
This event kicks off Season ’42 with the opening of ticket sales for the coming concert events and the first chance to sign up for volunteer slots for the events.
It starts with a short membership meeting to amend the JAHC Bylaws to allow the Council to seat two student representatives and to allow the Council to hold its Annual Membership meeting in August, and assuming that amendment passes, we will salute outgoing board members and elect new board members. Our goal is to turn the Annual Membership meeting in to an exciting event that properly kicks off a new year. Put it on your calendar!
